Beginning Jan. 31, 2009, volunteers who are ages 13 to 16 may assist in events or reading therapy only. Current volunteers in that age range can stay in the capacity for which they were trained.

The first step to volunteering is to attend an orientation. All prospective volunteers must contact Mary Ellen, Director of Volunteer Services, 10 days prior to orientation to sign up. At the orientation, you will receive a brief history of the shelter, learn about volunteering policies and procedures, hear about the many ways you can volunteer, and take a tour of our shelter.
Volunteer orientations are held on the first Saturday of every month from 10 am - noon, and the second Wednesday of the month from 5 pm - 7 pm at our Adoption Center. You must attend orientation prior to volunteering. Further training is available for those who are interested in specialized volunteer activities.
If you have a group on 12 or more, we can schedule a private orientation at your place of business or school. Call Mary Ellen, Director of Volunteer Services, at (760) 888-2270 to learn more about group trainings.
