The Escondido Humane Society

The Escondido Humane Society (EHS) is a regional animal care center founded in Escondido in 1915, which provides animal care, adoption, education and protection services to inland north San Diego County. Our mission is to promote responsible pet ownership by teaching compassion, respect, and caring treatment for all living creatures. EHS has a long and rich history of involvement with human-animal relationships, caring for more than 10,000 animals per year.

We are committed to providing a safe haven for homeless pets until they can be placed into permanent, loving homes. These animals are spayed or neutered and kept at EHS or with foster families until a permanent home can be found. Currently EHS is projecting an operating budget for the next fiscal year of $1.9 million for animal care and control services in the north county.

EHS has a significant impact in the region:

  • Received 4,000 stray animals from Animal Control
  • Received 2,943 dogs, 2,548 cats and 215 other animals from private owners
  • Spayed and neutered 2,009 animals
  • Served 10,200 children and adults through tours and classroom visits
  • Utilized 178 volunteers who spent over 14,700 hours walking dogs, working in the Thrift Store, and helping with customer service and fund raising and at mobile adoptions.
