CITY COUNCIL APPROVES $360,000
FOR HUMANE SOCIETY PROJECT
ESCONDIDO, CA --May 24, 2002-- At a council
meeting Wednesday night, the Escondido City Council unanimously approved
$360,000 to be invested into the Escondido Humane Society’s $3 million project
to rebuild the shelter that was destroyed by fire last year.
An appreciative EHS
executive director Phil Morgan said, “We sincerely
appreciate all the effort and support of the city and the encouragement of the
citizens of our community. We’ll have to cut back on our project,
but we’re still going to get the shelter rebuilt and that’s what’s most important.
We’re still slated to break ground next month.”
The city has agreed
to waive $210,000 in fees such as water, sewer and miscellaneous city fees.
They additionally agreed to contribute $150,000 for construction of the access
road leading to the site. The city has offered to lease the humane
society a 7.5 acre plot of land for $1.00 per year.
With the city’s
investment, the humane society will cut $1.3 million out of phases one and two
of their project. Prior to the city’s approval of funds, the humane
society faced cutting $1.6 million out of the project.
