COUNTERING THE KITTEN TREND WITH A
SENIOR CAT DISCOUNT
May 28, 2002—Escondido, CA— “Do you have
kittens?” That is the question of the moment at the Escondido Humane
Society. Unfortunately, with an endless supply of cute and cuddly
kittens, fewer people consider adopting older cats. To counter the kitten
trend, the Escondido Humane Society is offering a discount of $30 off the $85
adoption fee for all cat’s age seven and above. The discount is good from
now until the end of summer.
According to vet
tech Denice Beeson, “Older cats make great pets for older people because
they’re calmer and less destructive. We just had a seventy four year old
woman come in and adopt Cassy, one of our eight year old cats. She was
looking for a companion to keep her company. Cassy had been surrendered a few
months ago because her owner was moving away.”
Overall, adult cats
require less adjustment time and training than kittens. They’re already
housetrained, often more accustomed to a regular schedule of sleep and they’re
less destructive. All of the cats adopted from the Escondido Humane
Society are relinquished by people who are no longer able to care for their
pets. Prior to being placed up for adoption, the cats are given a
physical, flea control medication and their shots.
People who
surrender their cats often do so for drastic and sudden changes in their lifestyle.
For instance divorce, illness, relocation, unemployment and sometimes
death. According to Beeson, “I have a waiting list a page long of people
who need to surrender their cats. It’s sad, but until I can find homes
for the cats we have now, I can’t accept any others.”
