LA JOLLA YMCA GETS A
VISIT FROM
THE ESCONDIDO HUMANE
SOCIETY
ESCONDIDO, CA—AUGUST 5, 2002—Nigel the rooster, Chiva
the goat and Snoopy the miniature horse made their way to the La Jolla YMCA
last month where the Escondido Humane Society presented a week-long educational
program. As part of the program, the children were visited by veterinarians, an
animal dentist and a doggie bakery owner.
Escondido Humane Society Education
Director, Ina Shookhoff says, “Our program focuses on
animal care and the importance of being responsible pet owners. It helps us further the humane society’s
mission and lets us have fun while doing it!
One of the biggest hits at the camp was a visit from a dog bakery which
brought in animal biscuits for the children to decorate."
Professionals from various animal care industries
participated in the camp. Veterinarians talked about careers in animal care, an
animal dentist discussed oral hygiene and a dog trainer gave a demonstration on
dog obedience. The humane society concluded
the camp with a talk about the importance of spaying and neutering pets.
The EHS education program still operates despite the
loss of the shelter in 2001. The program
offers opportunities for children to discover themselves through meaningful
contact with shelter animals. For more information,
contact Ina Shookhoff at (760) 839-0080.
