Wednesday, October 24, 9:05 am -- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --

We are pleading for monetary support and supplies to care for the abandoned, rescued, and displaced animals from the fires in Escondido, Poway, Ramona, Valley Center, San Marcos, and beyond. Though our Adoption Center and Educational Center are closed and converted to emergency operations, our rescue efforts are at full-force. In addition to efforts at our center, we are staffing several evacuation sites throughout the county to keep the pets of evacuees safe.

Roads leading to the shelter are currently closed, but as of 9 am on Wednesday, police are allowing limited access to our shelter for those who may return to their homes and have temporarily placed their animals for care at the Escondido Humane Society.

Our thoughts are with those who have lost their homes. For those who have not, and are safe and able to assist, please help the animals affected by the fires by clicking the link above.
Some of the smallest victims of the firestorm. These puppies, along with their mother, were surrendered to our care on Friday by a tearful family who lost everything in the fire.
Friday, October 26, 5: 15 pm -- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The National Guard barricade has been removed. We now have the ability to freely accept volunteers, supplies, and donors and get the help that the animals need.

Our Adoption and Educational Center remains closed and is converted to emergency operations to care for the influx of animals affected by the firestorm.

Though the fires have slightly subsided and the immediate evacuation threat has been removed, today was just as trying a day as ever. We are learning that as people are allowed back into burned areas, more animals who desperately need help are being found -- especially the ones who are not so lucky to have been evacuated. This is the time when we need support to our Fire Fund, so we can give these animals the veterinary care (and much more) that they need.

We have had some especially heartbreaking stories here today. The puppies on the left, along with their mother and several other animals, were tearfully brought to us today after their family returned to rubble where their home once stood. Imagine losing all belongings - everything - and then losing your pets. Though it was incredibly hard, this family did what they feel is best for the pets they love - give them to someone who is better able to care for them.

We have had some happy stories today, too - we took a brief breath to witness the happy reunited pets and owners. One owner who had lost her pet implored that finding her dog after a disaster would give her some sense of normal when she desperately needed it. I think that's something we are all craving right now - and seeing others regain it gives us a sense of hope.
