CITY TO DECLARE
JANUARY 20,
“ESCONDIDO HUMANE SOCIETY DAY OF MEMORY”
ESCONDIDO, CA—January 16, 2003-
Mayor Lori Holt Pfeiler will declare Monday, January
20, “Escondido Humane Society Day of Memory”, in recognition of the second
anniversary of the fire that destroyed the former humane society building. Phil Morgan, CEO of the Escondido Humane
Society, will receive a written proclamation from Mayor Pfeiler
at the City Council meeting, January 22 at 4 p.m.
“This declaration is not only to memorialize the 115
lives lost in the shelter fire,” says Phil Morgan, CEO of Escondido Humane
Society, “but also to recognize the heroes.”
In the past two years, thousands of volunteers and
donors have contributed over one million dollars to the “EHS rebuild fund”. School
children have collected pennies, foundations have made grants, businesses have
matched employee contributions, and individuals from as far away as the East
Coast have sent in donations.
In May, the new Escondido Humane Society Animal
Center will open for business. The
shelter is located on ten acres of city owned land, next to the Mayflower Dog
Park. The Animal Center, which is the
first of a four building campus, will offer companion animal adoptions, a
wildlife holding area and housing for the Department of Animal Control.
