The Adoption Process

The Adoption Process

Adopting a pet is an exciting event so please take a few moments to learn about the adoption process. It will save you time and make your experience at the shelter a good one.

**Please note that it takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour to meet your potential pet(s) and complete the adoption process. This is to ensure that all of your questions are answered and that EHS is making the BEST MATCH for you and your new family member.

Viewing the Adoptable Animals
When you arrive at the shelter, please sign in at the front counter. An adoptions counselor will escort you to the adoptable animals. Please take your time and feel free to read the animals kennel cards.

We know you are excited about adopting a pet into your family, but please remember it can be stressful for the animals to be viewed by so many people.

PLEASE DO NOT POKE, SHOUT COMMANDS, OR TEASE THEM.

If you have children with you, please instruct them to walk slowly and talk quietly

Read the Animal Profiles
Each animal has a white card attached to his/her kennel. This kennel card has the animal's age, sex, breed, arrival method and spay/neuter status. The animal's behavior evaluation is located on the bottom of the kennel card. If the animal was surrendered by the owner there will also be a Pet Personality Profile located behind the kennel card.

If you see any animals you are interested in viewing outside of the kennels or learning more about, please write down the ID number (example: A037068).

Our intention is to gain an understanding of your home, lifestyle and experience with animals in order to match you with a compatible pet.

Meet the Animals One-on-One!
Come back to the adoptions front desk. The adoptions counselor will ask you to fill out a Pre-Adoption Questionnaire. You can also download one here and bring the questionnaire into the shelter with you. Once you have completed the Questionnaire, an adoptions counselor will escort you to an interact yard to have a one–on-one with the pet. If the pet is not the right one for you and your family feel free to visit us as often as you would like.

Finalize the Adoption!
When you do find the right pet, a counselor will finalize the adoption and review behavior and health topics, giving you helpful information about your new family member.
