Happy Stories

Every animal we place in a loving home is a success story that reminds us why we do what we do. Without your donations and the help of our volunteers, none of these success stories would be possible.

Zaphod

I have attached a photo of Zaphod's favourite position on Jack's lap. He is a wonderful family cat and we are really happy that he is a member of our family now. After the first 4-5 days of seeing him move around more than we ever thought possible, he has settled into his routine - mainly sleeping in his favourite spots for most of the day. Mornings, he sits in the front room by the sunny window, afternoons he moves to the family room and in the evening he has taken over my husband's chair with his
own blanket and toys!. At night he climbs onto Jack's bed and either sleeps on his legs or chest, depending on his mood.

After being in the shelter for so long, he is overweight and the vet has put him on a diet, which he seems to be coping with quite well. He is such a clever and loving cat; very calm and unassuming. He is extremely social and rushes to see us when we wake up in the mornings or when we come home from school we call him, as you would a dog, and he comes out to say hello. I can't imagine him not being around!

Thanks again

Sunny

SunnyI adopted a beautiful yellow lab on Feb. 14, 2003. EHS officers had found him wandering the streets of Escondido.  I got the most wonderful Valentine’s gift of my life that day.  He is a wonderful addition to our family.  His happy, mellow personality resulted in my naming him Sunny.  He came completely obedience trained and is now working  with me as a therapy dog bringing joy and happiness to those in schools, hospitals and other facilities.  Everybody loves Sunny.

He gets along beautifully with my other dog, Sara.  Sara was also adopted from EHS over eight years ago.  With Sunny in her life, Sara is a much happier and more confident dog.  I can’t imagine that his original family did not come to claim this wonderful fellow.  Not a day goes by that he doesn’t make me laugh at his playful antics.  Thank you EHS for bringing us together.  He has found his “forever” home with our family.

Bear

BearMy name is Bear, Dad named me. Dad said I looked like a little bear like the one the nice people at the Humane Society gave me to play with.

When I came to the EHS, I was only a puppy and I was hurt because someone had been mean to me. They patched me up better than new, then they waited and looked for a new Mom and Dad.

I am a Retriever, Shepherd, and who-knows-what mix. Mom says it doesn't really matter as I'm just cute. I've learned my basic commands, and now Mom and I are working on hand signals. I'm getting straight A's there too. Golly - all she has to do is whistle and I come running.

Maggie

We have had Maggie in our home since April 14, 2004. She is a wonderful pet. It has taken her a long time to learn to trust us. She isn’t a snuggly type but we are working on that. She loves to play and really likes being brushed, demanding it several times a day. We really enjoy her carrying her toy lamb (we call it her baby) around and crying at the top of her lungs. She is very vocal. We wonder if she has had kittens at one time. We are lucky to have chosen Maggie.

Mikah

We really didn't pick Mikah, he picked us. As we walked by the cages of kitties he jumped up and meowed at us. He rubbed himself on the glass and begged to be pet. We were a little bit hesitant when we learned that he had been adopted and returned the previous month, but after half an hour of playing with him we just thought he was great. We took him home and really weren't sure what to expect. After a few minutes under the bed, he jumped up on the couch and snuggled between the two of us, purring and looking at us with grateful eyes. He's now firmly established himself as the 'baby', and like all proud parents our house is littered with toys (including about 15 tailless mice). He follows us around the house and his favorite place is between us on the couch. At night he sleeps between us with his head on my pillow tucked under my chin and his paw on my face (he prefers to be under the blanket).

Recently we bought him a cat door which he is learning to use to sun himself on our enclosed patio. In such a short amount of time we have just fallen in love with this wonderful kitty. We don't know where he's been or what he's had to go through before us but one thing is sure. His long journey is over and he's finally home.

Mike

Mike came to the Escondido Humane Society when he was only 5 weeks old. He had been found wondering the streets. He was exhausted, frightened, hungry, and hurt. From his puncture wounds, body pain and nightmares we believe he was shaken very hard by another animal. He was so fragile that we didn't want to leave him in the kennels. For weeks he went home every night with our Director of IT and stayed in her office each day, growing stronger and more confident. He became a happy fixture here, but we knew it was time for him to have a home of his own.

Mike is now a whopping 65 lb, 8 month old bundle of love. He lives with his new mom, dad and teenage brother (the human type), and a cat that loves to chase him around the house. Mom works at home, so Mike gets to go for walks every morning, ride along to school with his brother (but they won't let him stay) and spends the day helping mom with her office work. In the evening he waits at the door for dad to arrive home and spends his evenings socializing with his new family.

Lazer

Lazer came to the Escondido Humane Society at the tender age of 1 month old. He and his brothers and sisters stayed with us in our nursery. When his new owners took him home he was given the great gift of a permanent loving home with an older cat to mother him. His new parents wrote us this wonderful letter and sent a picture that let us know that Lazer found the perfect home.

"After 2 months of many visits to find a playmate for our cat Fuzer, we found this kitty. We were a little hesitant after finding that his father was a feral cat, but this kitten was so friendly.

We brought him home and introduced him to his new sister/mother/playmate after 24 hours. What a great choice. He "talks" to us and loves to be pet. He's a rascal, a clown, a loving addition to our household."
